How do I talk to my kids about internet safety?

Don't miss the "Take Control of Your Family’s Tech", a live presentation from The Mindful Tech

By Amanda Burma, The Mindful Tech May 3, 2019

As a mom of two elementary age boys, I’m continuously encouraging open conversations about internet safety.

But am I getting through?

Some days I feel as if they get it, and others, I can tell I’m not getting through. It’s these moments which scare me most.

Their interest in following YouTubers began a few years ago, and from the gate their father and I continually reminded them; no matter how nice Amy, in “Amy’s Land of Love” may seem, she is still a stranger.

Now into following DanTDM, another YouTuber, the conversation continues.

We find ourselves going in circles. Yes, meeting someone famous would be neat, but this is a stranger. Someone you know nothing about, and despite how they appear online, could be a completely different person.

While we’ve gotten through on passwords, participating in chats when playing online games, never watching anything with bad words, or that you know we wouldn’t approve of, the YouTuber topic remains a challenge.

Not giving up. Keeping the conversation going. As with anything, we are continually teaching our children, preparing them to be the best people they can be.

Combining these continuous open conversations with parental controls across all online devices can help us not only protect our children, but also raise a generation of responsible and mindful children.

Join me Thursday, May 9th at the Golden Public Library from 6 - 7pm for Take Control of Your Family’s Tech

Kids welcome!

Families today are asked to take on an avalanche of technologies, connected to the outside world, and with little knowledge how to control each device.

Let Mindful Tech take on that burden, identify the risks, and deliver a comprehensive plan for placing technology access back within your control, and most importantly, customized to your needs.

With over 20 years experience in technology, Amanda Burma, Founder and Owner of Mindful Tech, delivers an invaluable resource within the community.
