Beach in Arvada?  Yes!

Sand sculpting teams for the upcoming fifth annual Sand in the City completed a practice round the weekend of June 3 at Water World. The 2017 teams will be crafting sand sculptures with the themes of The Simpsons, Baseball, and Polar Bears to name a few.

“People can expect to see some new and exciting themes this year,” said Kami Welch, president of the Arvada Chamber. “In the fifth year, there is a level of expertise. We have five returning teams, so we expect that the sculptures will be bigger and better than before.”

This year’s teams are Arvada Young Professionals, Blues & BBQ for Better Housing Festival, Doral Academy of Colorado, The Family Tree, REMAX Alliance Olde Town, Red Rocks Community College, Bengtson Wealth Management, and Jefferson Center for Mental Health.

The 5th annual event will kick off at Ralston Park at 64th and Simms in Arvada, Saturday and Sunday, June 24 and 25.

Giant sand sculptures created by local residents will be the main attraction at the two-day festival. They will be joined by over 100 craft and local food and drink vendors; and Kids’ Zone with a giant sandbox and inflatables; and a photo booth made out of sand.

New to this year’s event will be a luau each day, which will feature traditional Hawaiian music, dance, and food for purchase. Disney characters Moana and Maui and Ariel will also be at the event for the first time.

“We invite your family to come for an hour or make it a full day event,” Welch said. “There’s plenty of entertainment for people to spend many hours at the event.”

To help event attendees enjoy the event, more seating and more shade will be available. Welch said that through community partnerships, the Chamber was able to secure tents, which will be placed on the field along with more tables and chairs for people to dine and stay for a while. The goal, Welch said, is to create a better guest experience.

Proceeds Benefiting Hope House of Colorado

This year, a portion of the proceeds from Sand in the City will benefit Hope House of Colorado, an Arvada-based nonprofit that offers programs designed to help parenting teen mothers become self-sufficient.

Lisa Stevens, executive director of Hope House Colorado, said that being the event's beneficiary will help expand services for teen mothers in the area. Hope House is currently building a resource center at 64th and Sheridan in Arvada, which will enable them to triple the number of girls they serve.

“It’s exciting because this is also an event that we can bring them to,” Stevens said. “We can invite them to bring their kids and have fun and play together.”

Stevens said it’s also an opportunity for Hope House girls to volunteer and give back to the city.

“We’re super excited about it,” she said.
