My 3 year-old-granddaughter has now enjoyed swimming lessons for nearly 3 months with British Swim School - Broomfield - Louisville. She advanced from the Starfish stage (water acclimation for 3+ years) when she learned more about the water and water survival. Although she was never afraid of the water, this first stage helped her understand how to be safe in the water -- and let her parents and grandparents breathe a little easier.
Next, she advanced to the Minnow ((beginner water survival for 3+ years), concentrating on fun, safety and independence. Again, in her small group lesson, she felt more comfortable with her instructor and the two little boys with whom she shared lessons.
Turtle 1 (advanced water survival for 3+years) is really emphasizing survival and movement in the water. She's learning beginner strokes (see below and last week's review), and to be honest, this stage of lessons almost feels like it's for us the parents and grandparents -- because I feel much better about having her near the water (even though we won't take our eyes off of her!). My granddaughter is being taught the same strokes and then moving into back floats.
I'm still surprised that each week she makes more progress. Last Saturday, her instructor Meredith continued with the "peanut butter and jelly" stroke, which she almost automatically did (after just 2 weeks of instruction). No, it's not perfect, but I can see her raising her arms out of the water -- and it's so cool (especially because I'm such a terrible swimmer!).
